Let's talk trash
Waste and Recycling--how you
can help your environment stay clean
Fun Trash Facts:
- The average American creates up to four pounds of solid
trash everyday
- In a year, the average person creates up to 560 tons of
trash
- 1/10 of garbage is recycled in America
- We receive up to 4 million tons of junk mail per year
- An average person uses about 650 pounds of paper per year
- 1/3 of waste in the U.S. is generated by packaging

Recycling Facts:
- 1,500 aluminum cans are recycled every second in the U.S.
- 60% of the world's lead supply comes from recycled batteries
- It takes 90% less energy to recycle one aluminum can than to make a new
one

That's a lot of waste. But what can you do to help?
Reduce and Reuse. . .
- Reuse old bottles and plastic containers
- Use rags instead of paper towels
- Bring your own bags to the grocery store
- Donate re-usable clothes and appliances to charitable
organizations
- Recycle everything you can
- Buy recycled items
- Buy in bulk (less packaging)
Things that can be recycled:
- glass
- newspapers
- metal cans, caps, lids and foil
- plastics with # 1 and # 2 stamped on them
- grocery bags
- mixed papers (computer, colored, etc.)
- Aluminum cans
