Here is some documentation regarding scanning.
How to scan images on the flatbed scanners
Scanning an Image
For both scanners:
- Place the item on the scanner flatbed, face down. Open HP Director.
- If you are scanning slides or film, load the slides or film into the appropriate holder on the Transparent Materials Adaptor, and cover extra space with the black plastic piece. Place the Transparent Materials Adaptor on the scanner flatbed.
- Select Scan Picture.
- If asked Do you want to preview your scans before saving? Select Yes and click OK.
- When asked What are you scanning? select the option that best fits the image you are scanning.
- If you are scanning non-transparent material (i.e. a printed photo), choose Original from glass.
- If you are scanning slides, select Slides from a Transparent Materials Adaptor.
- If you are scanning film, select Negatives from a Transparent Materials Adaptor.
- Select Scan.
- The scanner will give you a preview of your image. Crop so that just the part of the scanned item that you want to save is selected. Click Accept.
- It will then ask if you want to scan another document. Select your answer and follow directions accordingly.
- HP Photo & Imaging will then pop up, with your document. Double click onto your document, and edit it accordingly.
- Once you are done editing, select Save As. You can then select the quality you want your image to be, name your file, and select its destination.
Scanning an Image & Editing through Adobe Photoshop Elements
For both scanners:
- Double click Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 on the desktop.
- Select Start from Scratch.
- When given the option to open a new document, close that window or select Cancel.
- Look at the scanner to see which model you are using.
- If you are using the HP Scanjet 5590, select File > Import > HP Scanjet 5590 TWAIN.
- If you are using the HP Scanjet 4590, select File > Import > HP Scanjet 4570c/5500c.
- The scanner will give you a preview of your image. Crop so that just the part of the scanned item that you want to save is selected. Click Accept.
- The scanned image will appear in Photoshop Elements, where you can edit the size (for example, to change the image size, go to Image > Resize > Image Size)
- Go to File > Save As and select the file destination, name your file, then select what kind of file you want it to be (ie, JPEG, GIF, or TIFF). When saving as a JPEG, you will have the option of choosing how high or low the quality of your image will be. The lower the quality, the less memory the file takes up.
How to scan film and slides
Nikon Scanner Directions
For the Nikon Super CoolScan5000 ED scanner:
- Double click the Nikon Scan 4 icon on the desktop and turn on the scanner by pressing the power switch.
- Note: A message may be displayed stating that the folder selected for temporary storage is not available. Click OK to use the default folder.
- Hold the edges of the film lightly between thumb and forefinger with the reflective base up and the matte emulsion surface down.
- Insert your media into the scanner:
- If you are scanning slides, insert a slide long ways into the scanner slot.
- If you are scanning film, insert the film in the adapter film slot.
- The film will be fed into the adapter automatically after being inserted a short distance.
- Release the film when the feed mechanism activates. Do not pull or push on the film or otherwise interfere with the feed mechanism.
- Click the film type menu and choose a film type that matches the film being scanned. If you are scanning color film negatives for example, select Neg (Color)
- Select the frames to be scanned.
- Click the thumbnail drawer tab
- The thumbnail drawer will open. The frames in the film are identified by frame number.
- A thumbnail will be created for each frame. Click a frame to select it for preview at a larger size in the scan window preview area.
- Click the Preview button to preview the selected frame in the preview area.
- Click the triangle next to the Layout Tools palette in Tool Palette 1. The Layout Tools palette will be displayed.
- The Layout Tools palette can be used to rotate or flip the image in the preview area.
- The Layout Tools palette can also be used to select the area to be scanned.
- Note: When an image is displayed in the preview area, the Crop palette in Tool Palette 1 can be used to specify the size and resolution at which the image will be scanned.
- Click the Scan button to scan the image. When scanning is complete, the image will be opened in an image window. The image in the image window will reflect any rotations, flips, and other modifications made in the scan window.
- Note: The scan window may remain open on top of the image window. Drag the scan window to move it out of the way of the image window.
- To save the image, select Save from the File menu. A Save As dialog will be displayed; navigate to the desired location (i.e. desktop, or your alexandria drive), choose a name and file type (JPG, GIF, etc.), and click Save.
- Click the eject button in the scan window to eject the film from the SA-21.
- To scan more film, repeat steps 2 through 10.
- After you are finished scanning and have ejected all of your film, exit the Nikon Scan 4 program. Check that the scanner status LED is not blinking, then press the power switch to turn the scanner off.
For the Nikon LS-2000 scanner on the Apple computer:
- Double click the Nikon Scan 3.1 icon on the desktop.
- Ensure that the scanner is on.
- If you are scanning a slide, insert the slide long ways and ensure the scanning type is set to positive.
- If you are scanning film, load the film into the film-strip adapter (it may not be at the scanning station) and ensure the scanning type is set to negative.
- Click Preview.
- Once your image preview shows up in the window, select the area you want to be scanned, and click Scan. The area you selected will be scanned and will pop up in a new window.
- Click File > Save As. Name your file, select a file type (i.e. tiff or jpeg), select the location of the file as desktop, and change the quality of the picture as desired.
- Click Save.
- Open Internet Explorer and email the file to yourself, or save the file onto a zip disk.
- Delete your file and exit all programs when you are finished.
How to scan editable text
Scanning a Document and Saving as Editable Text
For the HP Scanjet 4570c scanner:
- Left mouse click (LC) START
- Move to All Programs
- Move to Media Applications
- Move to Hewlett-Packard
- Move to Scanners
- Move to and (LC) Photo & Imaging Director
- (LC) Scan Document
- Select Editable Text or Editable Text with Graphics
- Select Destination: Microsoft Word
- (LC) SCAN
- Misaligned papers in the scanner should automatically straighten. Adjust border around image if needed using cursor.
- (LC) Accept
- Do you want to scan another page into the current document? (LC) YES or NO
- Scanner will display PROCESSING.
- Edit finished document at this time if you wish. Processing has difficulty with large font.
- Save to file of your choice or to disc.
For the HP Scanjet 5590 scanner:
- Open HP Director
- Click Scan Document; be sure to place the item you want to scan on the scanner bed, face down.
- Select Yes when asked Scan for editable text (OCR)?
- If the document you are scanning also contains images, on Original contains graphics? Select Yes. If not, select No.
- Next to Scan to, select Save to File and it will be saved as a Rich Text file, which can be opened in Microsoft Word or Word Pad.
- Select Scan. It will show you a preview of your scanned image, allowing you to select what part of the scanned document you would like to save. Crop the image, and then select Accept.
- It will ask you if you want to scan another document. Follow the instructions according to what you need to do.
- Name the scanned file and select its destination (for example, the Desktop), then click Save. It will then process the page.
