Marine Projects: Point Defiance Beach Organisms

To emphasize the connection between the sciences, a companion project to the “Point Defiance Park geology” is "Point Defiance park beach organisms," which focuses on marine biodiversity. We plan to work with students from the General Ecology (Bio 211) and Marine Biology (Bio 477) courses to examine marine diversity within 1 m  x 1m quadrats at random intervals along a beach transect. Images of the quadrats will be georeferenced and then analyzed for species present, number of motile species, and percent cover of immotile species.  The following map displays some the organisms students may encounter when conducting this project.
